I have been a major fan of Alm1ghty Rec0rds' tunes since my days in University. Been collecting albums, compilations and cd singles from them. Most of the time, they make a dance remake of the pop tunes not available in dance versions. Well, back in the 90s we don't have the luxury of enjoying all TOP 40 hits remixed like the current TOP 40.

I got really bored mixing current TOP 40 charts. The more I listened to them the more they all sound so alikes to me. Nevertheless, being one of the admin for my fanpage: TOP 40 Mixes Factory, I must make sure there are mixes published every week there.

Since there were no mixes submissions for that week, I made this mix in emergency for Friday release. Well, not really one of my favourite actually... I've mentioned before that I'm so not into current TOP 40 songs right? Hehehee....

Goin' 70s - Volume 1

I got really bored these days with current TOP 40 songs. They all just sounded so much alike to me one from another. It's all so predictable and mixing them just is just not as fun as it used to be. Well, this probably explains why no SPOTLIGHT have came out for awhile from me.

So about two weeks ago, I actually did my first gig after being a bedroom DJ for 3 years for a private event. Well, I was excited of course and feel challenged especially when I found out my crowds was average more than 45-60 yrs old. Luckily I did prepare some disco songs for the night. Well, the gig went well. The crowd was happy, dancefloor were pretty packed and I was just requested to play again for the next event next month.

So in preparation for these upcoming gigs, I start collecting and listening to 70s Disco Songs and learn how to mix them (not just let one song finish and drop the next song, because that's what a jukebox does!).

And I must say that this is definitely stepping up a few more levels from what I've been mixing all this time. I have no problem with manual beatmatching. But these 70s discos are definitely real challenges. Because the bpm is not constant... It just keeps jumping forward and backward. With the eighties, I can easily beatmatch the song on my headphone while the other one is still playing. Then blend in when the transition moment come. But with the 70s, I can't do that. Not only I have to beatmatch continuosly because the speed is going up and down unpredictably! I must say that riding the waveforms on my Serato screen really helps me a lot. I'm not sure if one day I can do it by ear only because what's coming is so unpredictable: it can speed up or speed down variably.

I know many prefer to just drop the tunes without worrying beatmatching when it comes to 70s discos. But at the moment, I'm still trying to adopt my mixing style to these tunes. Because if the songs are beatmatched nicely, even though it's just a simple fade in & fade out, I'll get the moment precisely and I like how they sounds when it happens.

So, here's my first published mix for 70s disco. I tried to use the original version songs as many as I can. Because when we are talking about Classic Disco, be it 70s, 80s and 90s... I am not only "selling" you some great tunes, but I also want to "sell" you some nostalgic moments. Bringing you back in time to that moment when you listened to these songs.

I know there's a lot of areas I need to improve. Hopefully, I'll get better with the upcoming series. Enjoy!!!!

goin' jazzy 3: Bossanova Jawa

I remember back in 2001, I was strolling in TARA MEGASTORES at Kelapa Gading Mall when I listened to this very unique bossanova tune played out from the store's speakers. Immediately I approached the counter to ask what song they were playing. Then they showed me this album: BOSSANOVA JAWA VOL. I was very interested after listening to a few more songs in the album. Well, I've always loved traditional songs, but only a few actually meet my taste due to their musical arrangements. From there on, I am hooked and have been buying the series ever since.

Totally, there are 4 BOSSANOVA JAWA albums produced so far. Each album presents different singers, thus although it's still the same bossanova style, but each singers brought their own characters and interpretations to the songs. So when Febry/Zabreack requested us to submit special mixtapes to commemorate Indonesia's 67th Independence Day this year at Classic Disco Mix, I was clueless at first on what to make. But when listening to one of the song from the album in my car, I came up with this idea of making a special mix to tribute this group: BOSSANOVA JAWA.

Well, the execution itself was very challenging and time consuming, especially on playlists preparation. Not only they are not "dj friendly", but these bossanova's songs comes in a variety of keys and bpms. It took me about 1 full weeks to listen to the 4 albums and carefully adding and deleting these songs. What can I say: I like most of the songs! So it was very hard to decide which one to be added to the playlists and which were to be deleted.In the end, there are 12 songs selected. Why not more? Because I try to keep this mix interesting to you all, my listeners. Running too long, I'm afraid I will bore you. Afterall, not everyone is Javanese here. So these songs might be strangers to your ears.

Last words: If you enjoy this mix, I suggest you to buy the albums. They are definitely worth collecting and a great addition to your musical library.
